Davido reveals how P-Square inspired his music career

Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has revealed that iconic music duo P-Square played a major role in inspiring his decision to pursue a career in music.

Speaking during a recent interview with the BBC, Davido recalled proudly telling his schoolmates about Peter and Paul Okoye, whom he viewed as proof that African artistes could achieve global recognition.

The singer said P-Square’s international collaborations and relationships with global music stars gave him confidence that Nigerian and African artistes could compete on the world stage.

“P-Square inspired me. I used to tell my friends in school about how they were two African artistes who had a song with Snoop Dogg and were friends with Kanye West,” he said.

According to Davido, witnessing the twins break international barriers encouraged a new generation of Nigerian artistes, including himself, to dream beyond Africa.

P-Square, comprising twin brothers Peter and Paul Okoye, were among Africa’s most successful music groups, with their music and international collaborations helping to create a path for the global expansion of Afrobeats.

Their influence has extended to several younger Nigerian stars, with Davido, Wizkid and Rema among artistes who have benefited from the global platform created by earlier generations of African musicians.
